Little Thanks

Filed under: samples — Chris Gontarz @ 12:06 pm

A Little ThanksSome wonderful ladies in my sideline helped in a time of need! I really appreciate their help and I wanted to send them a little thank you note to say so.

I’m really starting to use our background papers quite a bit. It’s fun just combining a few extra colors and an accent here and there to come up with a quick and easy card. I used the paper piercing template from the crafters tool kit as a pattern for my cross stitching. Then I just threaded the tool kit needle and stitched using linen thread. My cardstock colors are Certainly Celery Designer Prints background paper, Wild Wasabi, Chocolate Chip, Soft Sky, and Whisper White cardstock. I sanded the edges of the Certainly Celery background paper with a sanding block to give it a little dimension. Circle of Friendship is stamped in Chocolate Chip and popped up with dimensionals on the Soft Sky scalloped circle. The card measures 4 1/4 x 4 1/4. I love this size card. It seems so easy for me to come up with something using this format. Thanks for looking! Enjoy your day!

Year-Round Organizing

Filed under: 3d items, gifts — Chris Gontarz @ 10:00 pm

Organizer open viewAfter a few days of pondering what should actually go into my organizer, I’ve finally come up with what I think is the perfect year-round organizer for my gift giving. Don’t get me wrong, I love all those ChristmasAll Event OrganizerGift guide and perpetual calendar organizers that I’ve seen lately, but I wanted an organizer that could be used throughout the year. I’m thinking of giving these to my kids teachers for Christmas. So, here’s what’s in my pockets:

If you click on the links above, they should take you to a PDF file for each of the documents I created.

To make the organizer, I followed two tutorials and then combined them both to personalize Perpetual calendar closeupmy own and make it useful for my own purposes. Gift guide closeupHere are links for the samples that I used as my inspiration: Blue Moon Stamping, Stamps, Paper, Scissors. My spirals for my gift guide are quite large. I only had the 5/8″ binding coils for the Bind-it-All. I think the guide would look much better if it were bound with the 1/4″ coils. Just one more thing that I need to order. If you have a chance to get one of these little beauties, GET IT! I Note cardslove mine! It cuts through chipboard, CDs, metal, and lots of other stuff.

My supplies included:

  • Stamps: Amazing to Zany, Bold Alphabet (retired), Flowers & Flourish
  • Cardstock: Old Olive, Close to Cocoa, Cameo Coral, Apricot Appeal, Whisper White, and Linen Prints background paper
  • Ink: Old Olive, Close to Cocoa, Cameo Coral, Apricot Appeal
  • Accessories: Rose and Chocolate 1/4″ grosgrain, Old Olive 5/8″ grosgrain, Scallop circle and 1 3/8″ circle punch, white 2-pocket file folder, Large Open-end envelope, Small Open-end envelopes, Bind-it-All.

Thanks so much for looking! If you have any questions, please be sure to let me know!

Surprise Pop-Up Card

Filed under: samples, scs challenges — Chris Gontarz @ 12:59 pm

I thought I’d give the surprise pop-up card a try. The tutorial on SCS is fantastic and I would highly recommend stopping by to take a look. The only thing of note is that since there is no Wild Wasabi marker, if you “smoosh” your Wild Wasabi pad into the lid (while closed), you can pick up the color with a blender pen and apply it to your stamp to color the portions you wish. In this case, I used the blender pen and ink from the lid to color the stem and the little dot in the middle of the flower. Make sure you “huff” on your stamp just before stamping it onto your cardstock.

Here’s my take on the project:

Pop-up 1Pop-up 2

Supplies include:

  • Stamps: True Friend, All in a Row, Linen Background (stamped in River Rock on top of Whisper White)
  • Inks: Wild Wasabi, River Rock, Chocolate Chip
  • Cardstock: Really Rust, Wild Wasabi, Whisper White, Kraft, Apple Cider Designer Series Background
  • Accessories: Photo Corners Punch, 1 3/8″ Circle Punch, Crafters Tool Kit, Crop-a-Dile, Silver Brads, Wild Wasabi Double-Stitched Ribbon, Really Rust Marker, Blender Pen, 1/2″ Circle Punch

Enjoy your weekend! Hope to get some stamping started for World Card Making Day soon!

Thanks for looking!

Under Pressure

Filed under: 3d items, samples — Chris Gontarz @ 11:00 am

I’ve come to the realization after many years that sometimes most times I work better under pressure. Today was a perfect example. Took my DD to the doctor. She has a wicked case of poison ivy that has gone to her face. It’s not the skin, itchy-type of poison ivy, it’s the internal reaction kind. She looks as if we haven’t washed the Kool Aid off her face for a week. Of course this requires medication. We go to the grocery store to fill the prescription. There’s a small crisis at the pharmacy counter and our prescription takes about a 1/2 hour longer than expected. We do a little shopping ($50 worth, not too bad for not needing anything). I think they do this on purpose. We leave 45 minutes later with a prescription for steroids… all the while I’m thinking that my daughter is going to have a mustache before Christmas because of the steroids. She’s only ten… I haven’t even shown her how to shave her legs yet. Now, I might have to have my husband show her how to shave a 5 o’clock shadow.

I decide to treat her (and me) to a little more breakfast before heading to school. Burger King was right next door (oh, how I love BK). She wants McDonalds. Since she does have poison ivy and all, we head to McDonalds. We turn the corner to enter the McDonalds parking lot and the whole building is gone. Just gone! Now, I start doubting myself. “Wasn’t there a McDonalds there just a few weeks ago?” “Am I dreaming?” Did I go to the wrong place?” A quick “U-ey” and we’re headed back to Burger King. Yippee for me!!! Oh, how I love those breakfast croissants. Cheese??? Yes!!! Sausage??? Yes!!! Egg??? Yes!!! Oh, and now they even have these little hash browns with cheese in them. I have died and gone to Heaven. We get our food stuffies and head to school.

Drop DD off at school and head home. I’ve got to get a birthday gift for one of the neighbor boys around the corner. I’ll go out a little later to pick up something. Of course I put it off and begin the many tasks of the day… dishes, laundry, school paperwork, etc. Next thing I know, the bus is pulling up at the corner. Oh no! No gift, no card, and no absolutely clever packaging idea for the gift I didn’t get. What to do??!! Quick… think! I’ve got it! The day before, he had gotten a new digital camera. So, I packaged up 10 AA batteries and a box of photo paper. Made a quick card and had it delivered before everyone left for ball practices and games. Plus, had dinner cooked and ready by 5:15. I haven’t thought of anything too original during the past few weeks. I felt so vindicated! I can still stamp. I can be creative. I just need 15 minutes and the sinking feeling of guilt to get things done! Phew!!! I had succeeded!!! And, the gift wasn’t days late!!! His mom was “amazed how cleverly I packaged the gift.” Pat on the back for me!!! My only concern was if I had washed out all the oranges from the container.

Here’s a pic of the gift package minus the photo paper. Pretty self-explanatory, but let me know if you have questions.quick bday package

guavas and artichokes for christmas?

Filed under: samples, scs challenges, tutorials, tips, & techniques — Chris Gontarz @ 1:19 pm

i tried another scs color combo challenge. this time it was groovy guava and always artichoke. you don’t usually think of guava and artichoke for Christmas colors, but i thought it would be a little different.

groovy christmasthis card starts with a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ base card of always artichoke. i used my SU! cutter kit to “curvy cut” both top layers of the card at the same time.* the cutter kit works really well when you want a random-type cut on your cards.

i stamped the mini catalog season of joy swirl in always artichoke across the top of the naturals white. you gotta love the fact that all the sets in the new mini are precut for you. wow, did this save me a ton of time! the little flowers were stamped in groovy guava and dotted in the middle with the always artichoke marker. merry christmas was stamped in always artichoke. the piercing at the bottom follows the curvy cut of the layers. i used the sew crafty mini sewing machine that my dear friend Jody got me. i still can’t figure out how to actually sew with it, but it works really well if you’re just piercing your cardstock.

once the cut was finished, i used my small corner rounder… again, to scallop the curvy part. when scalloping a curved cut, turn your punch upside-down and make sure that the “v” shape of the corner rounder is flush against your cardstock. this will ensure you get even scallops.

cut your groovy guava with a 1/8″ border. using your crop-a-dile, dry emboss circles along the bottom edge. you can see a fantastic tutorial on how to emboss on beate’s blog.

CAD tip 1CAD tip 2the only addition i have is use your paper piercing template from your crafter’s tool kit to line up your holes and to gently squeeze your crop-a-dile. this ensures you don’t actually punch a hole through your paper. layer your groovy guava on the inside of your card to finish.

thanks for looking and have a great day! if you have any questions or comments, please be sure to leave them for me!

*quick tip: to ensure your layered curves match each other, cut the width of your top layer of cardstock (in this case naturals white) down to the finished layered size. i took 1/8″ off one side for a measurement of 4 1/4″ x 5 3/8″. do not cut off the top or bottom yet. temporarily adhere the naturals white layer on top of the always artichoke and cut your curvy cut. if you’re going to scallop when finished, trim the top off to match your side layer (in this example, about 1/4″ or 1/2″ depending on how much of the scallop border you want to see. if you’re not going to scallop, just use the measure that you took off of the side. in this example 1/8″).
